Veteran launches 'Second Call to Duty' to recruit poll workers

CINCINNATI — With early voting already underway and Election Day approaching, one local veteran is leading a new effort to recruit poll workers — this time focusing on those who have already served the country.

“We just have this instinct built in us to serve our country,” said Raquel Burgos, a Navy veteran and deputy director at the Hamilton County Board of Elections. “And this is another way that they can do that. But just locally.”

Burgos, who spent more than a decade working at the Hamilton County Board of Elections after her military service, has launched a new initiative called “The Second Call to Duty.” The goal: enlist military veterans to serve again — this time at the ballot box.

“Through this program, veterans get meaningful roles while helping us execute our mission of free and fair elections,” Burgos said.
