Ohio sees uptick in new voter registrations ahead of off-year elections

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Elections officials expect lower turnout in off-year elections, but say new voter registrations have picked up in recent days.

“People are registering, but certainly not to the numbers of a presidential or even gubernatorial year,” Franklin County Board of Elections spokesman Aaron Sellers said.

According to the Secretary of State’s new Voter Registration Data Dashboard, statewide, nearly 7.9 million Ohioans are registered to vote. In Franklin County, 882,899 are registered. Delaware County has 164,723 registered voters. Fairfield County has 109,734.

Elections officials say requests for absentee ballots are also much lower. Franklin County is getting ready to mail nearly 3,500 absentee ballots on Tuesday, compared to tens of thousands on the first day of absentee voting for the presidential election.
