What to know about Ayman Soliman, the detained Muslim chaplain whose supporters were arrested

More than a dozen people protesting the detainment of a Muslim chaplain were arrested Thursday night in Cincinnati.

Video from the demonstration shows some protesters blocking the Roebling Bridge that carries traffic between Ohio and Kentucky, as well as one officer punching a protester while others wrestle him to the ground. At least 13 people were arrested, including two journalists.

The demonstrators were there to support Ayman Soliman, an Egyptian immigrant who has worked as a chaplain at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and was detained last week during a check-in with immigration officials.

Soliman, 51, served as an imam — a Muslim religious leader — in Egypt for 14 years before fleeing to the United States in 2014, according to the Initiative on Islam and Medicine, where he serves as a board member.

1. Two Chaplins fired at Cincinnati Children's for supporting Ayman Soliman.

This was sent this morning by my friend, Sarah Allen, who’s husband, Adam Allen was just fired by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital as a result of his support for a fellow Chaplin, Ayman Soliman.

“Cincinnati Children’s fired two chaplains who have been outspoken about the ICE detainment of fellow chaplain and asylum seeker, Ayman Soliman. One of those chaplains is my husband. The hospital has chosen to remain silent on the subject and it feels like retaliation. They were vague with Adam about the reason he was let go. Since Adam has been here, the #1 children’s hospital in our country has fired 4 chaplains. These are people who are licensed ministers in their denominations and faith leaders in the community. Some of these ministers are being punished for living out their convictions and speaking up about injustices carried out against others. What is expected when faith leaders are hired to care for some of our countries sickest children and their families. These pastors, imams, rabbi, and other have the biggest hearts to care for people and take seriously their role in the world. They will not be limited and suppressed or bullied by their employer. These ministers have had their livelihoods stripped by their employer because of… I don’t know. They won’t say why. I am outraged. If you would like to help, please write to the hospital at stephanie.ebken@cchmc.org.”
