Onondaga County election commissioners address backlog in voter registration applications
Syracuse, N.Y. — Republican Election Commissioner Michele Sardo and Democratic Election Commissioner Dustin Czarny spoke publicly for the first time since news surfaced of what the state board of elections called an "unacceptable backlog" in processing voter registration applications.
They confirmed they were on the other side of the ordeal in a statement Friday morning:
We are happy to confirm that the State Board and the Onondaga County Board of Elections agrees the backlog has been cleared. Over the last 6 weeks our staff has worked tirelessly to process an unprecedented surge in registration forms. During that time, we processed over 30k registration forms and 25k vote by mail applications. That is more work than we sometimes receive in an entire year. We thank the State Board of Elections for their assistance and guidance. We are now processing daily and believe we have the resources to deliver on this very important election three weeks from now.
The Onondaga County BOE received a scathing letter from the state, in which they expressed their "grave concern" over the issue. "The severity of this situation not only threatens the integrity of the upcoming election, but also undermines the basic rights of all voters, but especially military and overseas voters, whose timely processing is required under federal law," the letter said.
