Hartzler switches positions on town hall meetings

In Vicky Hartzler’s run to a 2010 victory over U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton, town hall meetings — those she held and those Skelton did not — were an asset to her campaign.

The Republican said on her campaign website that town meetings were where she received the best ideas, especially on health care.

“I am the only candidate for Congress in the Fourth District who went to the people first about health care,” Hartzler wrote under the heading “True Health Care Reform for Our Families” in 2010. “I took paper and made notes on good ideas and solutions back in September. It was a great dialogue at our town hall meetings.”

This year, town hall meetings — demanded by demonstrators showing up in large numbers at Boone County events featuring Hartzler or her staff — are off the table. Like Skelton in 2009, when demonstrators appeared by the dozens outside his offices, Hartzler doesn’t see the need.
