Sterling Heights city council candidate (R) defends 2008 arrest

A candidate for the Sterling Heights City Council this week defended his arrest 17 years ago by the city’s police department for obstructing police at the home of his son during a family trouble incident.

Daniel Acciacca, 67, was taken into custody after he refused to obey police orders to leave his son’s home while police were investigating a dispute there. He also showed up drunk, according to the police report.

The matter was later dismissed, although Acciacca said he was pressured to accept a plea bargain to resolve the matter.

“It was a family issue where my son calls me up over a relationship with a gal where the police were trying to get inside of his home, but the woman wasn’t there, and I said, ‘Then don’t let them in,'” Acciacca said Thursday.

“I showed up over there, and they were challenging my authority to be there, and I ended up getting incarcerated,” he said.
