Muskegon Mayor Ken Johnson has 2 challengers in 2025 re-election bid

MUSKEGON, MI - Muskegon Mayor Ken Johnson is seeking a second term leading the city, while two challengers are aiming to unseat him.

Johnson is squaring off against Bob Garretson and John Richard Allen for another four-year term. The filing deadline was April 22. The top two vote-getters in the Aug. 5 primary will advance to the Nov. 4 general election.

Five candidates also filed for the two open at-large commissioner seats before the deadline.

Johnson has been mayor since 2022, after defeating longtime Mayor Steve Gawron. He worked in financial planning for LPL Financial and had been an at-large city commissioner for eight years, when he launched his accountability and transparency platform.

He said he would be making an official announced after the deadline for candidates to withdraw from the race. Candidates have until 4 p.m. Friday, April 25.
