Michigan absentee voting begins this week. Clerks urge voters to return ballots quickly

Municipal clerks across Michigan are preparing to begin mailing out as many as 1.8 million absentee ballots Thursday, and they're encouraging voters to return their ballots early amid ongoing concerns about the U.S. Postal Service's ability to deliver mail-in votes leading up to the Nov. 5 election.

Lingering issues with postal service stemming from the pandemic that hampered the 2020 election have prompted election administrators to urge voters who have signed to automatically receive a ballot in their mailbox to mail them back early, deposit them in one of their community's drop boxes or take them to an early voting site to run the ballot through a tabulator themselves.

Because of a 2018 voter-approved state constitutional amendment, any registered voter in Michigan can request an absentee ballot to vote early in the hotly contested presidential election, where mail-in voting could play a major factor in the contest between Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump.

Workers at clerk's offices in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties have been stuffing ballots into envelopes ahead of Thursday, when ballots are scheduled to be sent out.
