Lawmakers want to take Francis Newlands' name off Chevy Chase fountain,

saying he belongs in 'the dust bins of history'
Lawmakers aim to strike past US Senator and vocal segregationist Francis Newlands from his memorial fountain in Chevy Chase circle.

CHEVY CHASE, Md. — Three Maryland lawmakers introduced a bill which would remove the name of past U.S. Senator and segregationist Francis Newlands from his memorial fountain in the heart of Chevy Chase Circle.

The three democrats co-sponsoring the bill, D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin and Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen, said it represents a needed departure from praising a segregated history.
