School board candidates debate ahead of election
OTTUMWA Five candidates spent just over 80 minutes tackling some of the biggest issues facing the Ottumwa Community School District during a debate at the school's Career Campus Monday evening.
The topics were wide-ranging, from how the district can improve its academic profile with the Iowa Department of Education, to superintendent Mike McGrory's total compensation and the possibility of putting a joint high school baseball/softball facility in Ottumwa Park.
The five candidates included two who have worked with the district before Becky Ingle, who spent 38 years teaching in the district, and Dawn Sievertsen, who spent 17 years as a principal before retiring last summer and going to work at William Penn University as the director of distance learning.
The other three candidates Dusty Ware, Himar Hernandez and Brett White all possess strong local ties, either graduating from OHS, being highly visible in the community or both. Ware is filling a vacancy on the board, and seeks a full term in November.
