Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird was part of an entourage following Donald Trump into the courthouse Monday as the former president stands trial in a New York hush money case.
Why she was there, her office hasn't said.
Bird, a Republican, endorsed Trump ahead of the 2024 Iowa caucuses and has used her position to aggressively target Democratic President Joe Biden's policies.
In C-SPAN video footage, Bird can be seen entering the courthouse behind Trump along with a gaggle of supporters, including Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), and Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.). Vance is reported to be a vice presidential contender as Trump seeks another term in office.

From the day she launched her second bid for statewide office, Bird was running as much against President Joe Biden as against her Democratic opponent longtime Attorney General Tom Miller. She frequently said shed see Biden in court, and promised to give Joe Biden exactly what he deserves in her first television commercial (famous for its tag line, Give em the Bird!).
On her first day as attorney general, Bird formally signed onto several lawsuits that Governor Kim Reynolds had already joined on Iowas behalf. According to a January 3 news release, one case challenges Bidens student loan debt relief, three are related to vaccination mandates, and one targets language in the 2021 American Rescue Plan that restricted states from using the federal relief funds to pay for tax cuts.
Bird told the Des Moines Register that she expects Biden to take more unconstitutional executive action in the coming years, since Democrats no longer control the U.S. House. She added, it will become very important to step up and sue the federal government in that situation.

(5,860 posts)In Des Moines and Ames, it seems pretty mainstream/ centrist. Sioux City and the Quads are a mixed bag.
Get into the small towns, though, and It gets very wingnutty, very quickly. Overall their state government is much further right than most Iowans I meet.
