NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio station, KZZ-81 serves portions of northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana including the Chicago Metropolitan Area, from a 1000 Watt transmitter in Lockport, IL. The nominal effective range of the transmitter is about 40 miles.

Dangerous line of severe t-storms moving across the Chicago metro area will move into NW Indiana through 415 pm. Seek shelter BEFORE the storms arrive! Widespread 70+ mph winds likely, isolated areas will see stronger winds & possible tornado and/or tornado-like damage!

120,000 without power (including me). Des Moines, which strives to be an urban forest, has many streets blocked by downed trees.

I cleaned up the small branches in my yard and went searching for an open store to purchase batteries for the radio. Ace hardware was open despite no electricity, the staff were wearing head lights and carrying flashlights.

No estimate on when the power will come back on and I fear for my ice cream stash.
