State senator pushing for Florida school kids to learn about Emancipation Day and Juneteenth
During Black History Month, state Sen. Randolph Bracy is leading efforts to designate two important events in Black history as a special day of observance in Florida, while requiring that students in K-12 schools learn about Emancipation Day and Juneteenth.
Bracy, an Orlando Democrat, is pushing SB 1500, entitled “Special Days of Observance” that would require high school history curriculums to include “at least 45 minutes of instruction on the significance of Emancipation Day and Juneteenth Day,” according to a legislative analysis.
The instruction on those two Black history events would begin in the 2023-24 school year. Bracy has yet to respond to a request for comment from the Florida Phoenix regarding how the class instruction would be implemented.
Bracy, an Orlando Democrat who has been a staunch supporter of Black history legislation, argued on Monday that his bill pushes back against critical race theory, a controversial issue in which critics say GOP lawmakers want to block certain instruction in classrooms about racial history.
