WASHINGTON (7News) D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser told news outlets on Wednesday she was aware of Immigration agents visiting several D.C. restaurants, confirming murmurs on social media that caused some concerns with immigrant and minority rights groups.
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials did not respond to a request from 7News on the matter, and Mayor Bowser confirmed no D.C. Police officers were involved in the activities.
According to Immigrant advocacy group CASA, Immigration agents were set to perform enforcement actions targeting local delivery drivers and restaurants. It comes after President Donald Trump in March ordered a task force partially responsible for ensuring D.C. cooperated with ICE agents in deportation and immigration enforcement-related matters.
CASA, Congregation Action Network, National Immigration Law Center, Faith in Action, African Communities Together, CARECEN, and Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid, said in a joint statement they are working to provide resources to those targeted by the actions.
These raids disproportionately target immigrant communities, relying on racial profiling and intimidation rather than justice or due process. Instead of tearing families apart and destabilizing our workforce, we should be working toward an immigration system that strengthens the U.S., recognizing that immigrantsregardless of statusare an undeniable asset to our country, said Abel Nuñez, Executive Director of CARECEN in a joint statement from CASA.
