Shasta Registrar of Voters Curtis to stop sending out election update press releases
Shasta County Registrar of Voters Clint Curtis will stop sending out press releases to media outlets in advance of the upcoming Nov. 4 special election.
Curtis decision is in response to a letter he received on Thursday, Oct. 9, from David Loy, legal director of the First Amendment Coalition. In the letter, Loy, who is representing Shasta Scout, said the online publication had been excluded from the distribution of news releases sent by Curtis office.
I write to explain that your offices decision to exclude Shasta Scout from the distribution of press releases sent to other media outlets violates the First Amendment and threatens freedom of the press," Loy's letter states in part.
Please immediately restore Shasta Scouts access to distribution of your offices press releases. With an election scheduled for November 4, 2025, time is of the essence, and failure to restore Shasta Scout to distribution of press releases immediately would impact the publics access to relevant information and expose the County to imminent litigation, Loy's letter said.
