Pardoned by Trump but not by Arkansas, nursing home crook reports to state prison on his birthday

A spokesperson for the Arkansas Department of Corrections confirmed Monday that Joseph Schwartz, a fraudster who operated a multi-state nursing home chain called Skyline before his felony convictions, is marking his birthday by kicking off a stint in state prison.

Schwartz was sentenced in federal court in April to 36 months in federal prison for his role in a $38 million employment tax fraud scheme, having willfully failed to pay taxes owed. He withheld the amounts from employees’ paychecks, then pocketed it. His financial misdeeds also left grocery bills unpaid, in some instances forcing nursing home staff to buy food for residents.

President Donald Trump granted Schwartz a full and unconditional pardon in November, erasing any penalties for his federal charges and setting him loose after serving only three months of the three-year sentence.

But a presidential pardon does not erase penalties at the state level. And Schwartz’s company controlled nearly 100 nursing homes in 11 states, including several here.

I wonder how much of that 38 million the worthless pardon cost. 36 months for stealing 38 million almost sounds like a pardon already. Anybody would get more time for robbing a bank for 2 grand.
