Well, I just found out what I have: a common lung cancer, Adenocarcinoma.

Last edited Mon Oct 6, 2025, 03:24 PM - Edit history (1)

That's the bad news.

The good news? It has not spread. There is no lymph node involvement.

My surgeon is going to send me the names of two oncologists here near where I live, and I will pick the one who will give me the earliest appointment.

So there it is.

I'm not terribly surprised.

On edit: I want all of you to know how very much I love and appreciate all of you! I normally answer each post, but today that's impossible. So I'm giving each of you a rec to let you know that I've read and love what you've said. I'm really overwhelmed with the caring and intelligent messages! Thank you, all of you, for standing with me as I go through this new landscape.

A friend and business assiciate of mine who was a chainsmoker got lung cancer decades ago, in his thirties - the scare did make him stop smoking finally - and he recovered very quickly after surgery with no recurrence. I have a number of family members and friends who've beaten various types of cancer (the only exception being a neighbor who had the tragic misfortune to have doctors in different states who misdiagnosed early signs of pancreatic cancer for years, with her moving a few times during that period probably having made it less likely they'd take her symptoms seriously).

You'll be getting good care, and you have lots of support. Please take as good care of yourself as possible, as well. Pamper yourself. Treat yourself to everything that gives you joy, because that positivity should help you heal faster.

2 years ago, I received a similar diagnosis. NSCLC (adenocarcinoma) Stage 1B. Had an upper-right lobectomy, chemo, and targeted radiation for 5 days. So far so good--knock on wood. I have graduated to a 6 month interval Ct scan. I feel fine--maybe not as much lung power, but not bad. I walked for miles a day n Spain, in the heat, with covid, this past summer. I'm 76, and I never go anywhere without my mask--my husband did. I had my surgery on November 13, 2024 and hosted Christmas Eve dinner. I shouldn't have. I was glad to have the winter to recover. Get plenty of rest and use the spirometer at least 10 times a day--it's critical. You can do this. My very best wishes to you and your family.

there are several foods that have shown some sort of action against cancer - good stuff including certain fruits and nuts. And, of course, there are foods that should absolutely be avoided. My experience is that you will have to find them yourself. As a starting point, my understanding is that you should avoid red meat and most diary products. Cancer loves sugar.

My wife is a survivor of adenocarcinoma that originated in her pancreas and later popped up in her lung. She is currently showing all-clear.

My parents smoked, many family members smoke, and all my life I have inhaled smoke in many different ways. i also know of and loved folks who never smoked a whiff, and yet they contracted lung cancer.

The only reason I share this with you is that I want you to know you are not alone ~ even for schmucks like me who were exposed to this, even willingly, in so many ways.

My wife is going through the same thing, although hers was upgraded to stage 2 after the path lab examined lymph nodes from her excised upper right lobe. She's in chemo now. We were amazed at how far thoracic surgery has come. They took out everything through a short incision under her breast. Two nights in the hospital, then home. The quality of care she received was fantastic!

I hope you have a full and fast recovery! It sounds like you got early detection, thank goodness!

It was discovered early, with no metastatic spread, no lymph node involvement. I had five radiation treatments, stereotactic radiation, the strong stuff. I get scans every six months. I just had a scan a week ago. The cancer is gone, and there is just scar tissue now. The cancer has been gone for three years. My oncologist says that after the next scan, we can move to annual scans.

I think you will be okay, with this early detection. Cancer sucks, and it is scary, but you will be okay. Keep us informed. I will keep you in my prayers.

The good news is the tumor was picked up early, the cancer has not spread and that in itself gives you the best chance for a full recovery. My family has been plagued with recent cancer diagnoses, all with good outcomes. So, I'm sending you some family healing vibes and hugs for good measure.

Be good to yourself and take care.

My 75 yr old husband also had a lesion in his lung. He had already had prostate and bladder cancer. He treated both the prostate and lung cancer with radiation. 2 years down the road the cancer has not come back. I wish you the same ease of treatment and positive results. I am sure everywhere you go, you are loved. You will make new friends along the way through this journey, of that I have no doubt. Blessings for the blessed. 💙

As you remember, my wife survived “The Murderer” because it was caught before it could spread.

...when I was diagnosed, the sense of surreal. I didn't know how I would put one foot in front of the other or who I would be after treatment began and when/ if I would progress to healing. So many unknowns. I felt like I was walking on ground that disintegrated beneath me. But here I am, 8 years later, still cancer free. I am sending healing thoughts that you will have such a positive outcome. Please take good care of yourself, conserve your energy, and embrace all the peace you can. I will keep you in my thoughts.

Treatment methods these days are far easier than just a few years ago. My sister was diagnosed with uterine cancer six weeks ago. She had a robotic hysterectomy, left the hospital the same day, and recovered quickly.

She started 5 days a week for 5 weeks radiation treatments where the side effects are tiredness and possible more frequent urination. So far, she hasn't experienced any of that.

I'm so sorry to see this diagnosis, but good that it's not spread.

Glad you're California Peggy and not Mississippi Peggy, I think that means a better outcome. and I love all our MIssissippi members, but they know it's true.

And that said, keep us updated because, here, we care about each other... and I sure will be thinking of you every day.

I was diagnosed with cancer a year ago. Had surgery. I've been back for 3 month and 6 month follow up visits, and at the end of this month, go back for the one year follow up. The first two appointments were 100% clean. Hoping for the same on this one.

Needless to say, I think all of DU is with you on this. Early detection and proper treatment are game changers. Be well.

I was frightened, of course, but the tumor was small and, like yours, had not metasticized, I needed no chemo, it came out with no problems and I'm now cancer free..It's now gone and all that's needed is to have the area monitored every 6 months...May your situation be every bit as easy for you as it's been for me.

My cousin was just diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Not many options from the local folks - BUT - her second opinion at Mayo is giving her some hope. MD Anderson is where I would have gone for a second opinion for my sarcoma diagnosis, except it was diagnosed before there was a vaccination available for COVID.

You've caught it early - take advantage of the best cutting edge/experience there is.

At age 10, I was told my father was dead. At age 62, I was told I had cancer. Tough news of two kinds. but still have to grasp. I survived childhood without my father, but had a good and loving family to help me. I survived cancer (will be 76 this week) with a loving supportive husband, family and friends. Life is just hard.

Have someone with you when you see doctors. It is hard when they say things to believe they are talking about you.

Stay strong, admit you are struggling and let us know how you are doing.

Had to remove a lobe of the lung and did a year of immunotherapy infusions (atezolizumab) that was pricey, but Medicare covered it. Cancer free now.

Listen to the oncologists and make informed decisions. Things are not dire.

treatment. He seems VERY optimistic. He also said he won't know for sure if the treatments work for another 18 months. He is being treated for a life-long heart condition at the same time. He seems to be more optimistic about his lungs than his heart.

If I had to wait 18 months to see if the treatment has worked it would cause me tons of anxiety/stress just from "waiting".

What does your doctor say? Is it similar to my neighbor?

A routine chest x-ray showed a growth in my upper left lung. Turned out to be adenocarcinoma, and I was referred to the Baptist MD Anderson Center in Jacksonville FL. There, I was given the choice of treatment: surgery (with a 95% success rate) or radiation (90% success). I opted for the less-invasive option. Underwent the series of treatments which were successful. After the last treatment, they had me ring the bell -- a tradition where a patient marks the occasion by ringing a bell. I rang it just three times: one chime each for friends who had recently passed due to cancer.

This all occurred before the COVID pandemic. And annual follow-ups show no return of the carcinoma.

Wishing you the same level of success!

Stay strong!

Been there. The news of having cancer will sink in. When it does I made plans with a good doctor and got a second opinion and began my journey. (God, I learned to hate that word) Bottom line is...you WILL get through this. When completed the best advice I can give you is to STAY POSITIVE. Being a retired nurse I crossed my T's and dotted my I's. I literally looked forward and minimized the whole cancer debacle and put it behind me. Yep, I have my check-ups and tests and then move on. It's been three years and I continue to move forward never looking back.
My very best to you and if you ever feel like chatting give me a shout. Bless you Peggy. Stay strong and stay positive. You got this.
