A camera question -- could a damaged SD damage the camera?

I had an SD card become damaged -- a tiny portion of the edge of it had broken off. Not knowing that, I -- in the past -- had inserted that damaged disk into the camera.

And now, some time later, when I put any OTHER SD card into the camera, I get a message of

"memory card error" -- I've tried several cards.

I know that there isn't a fragment in the camera, as it had fallen onto the desk.

It's an older Canon -- not worth a whole lot, but I like it.

Is it shot?

Thanks in advance!

1. Turn device off completely and disconnect from wall charger

2. Remove any batteries for five minutes and then reinstall battery

3. Reset device to original settings

4. After reset, reinsert SD card and recheck operation

Edit: Additionally, refer to the most-excellent suggestion presented by 'usonian' just below.

Perhaps a card socket contact (one of the metal "fingers" ) has been damaged. Since it's recessed, it would be tough/impossible to assess that. Since you say that no fragment was left, that's my best guess.

It's conceivable that you (with an internet or other guide) could take enough apart to get to the card socket, and then ... TBD to diagnose/fix/replace the socket.
