but was taken out later (including in the "Directors Cut". Fortunately, I have a DVD of the original with the scene as that was very foolish decision.

Great song, great scene, great film and fantastic soundtrack.

One of the best parts.

I love this movie....the cinematography, the story, characters, and the music are haunting and beautiful. So much better than the original book and movie.

Thanks again, Swede!

but I don't think so. It may well be that any screening on tv takes the original theatrical version, so unless you purposely were looking to buy a copy, it might never have come up.

6. Just now sprang a theory on WHY the song and those scenes were removed.

I saw the movie in the theater and was mesmerized. Took the opportunity to own it when VHS was the prevailing home entertainment option. "Upgraded" to DVD when the technology shifted and, like so many others, was very disappointed with the altered version.

In the years since I have read my share of discussions echoing the sentiments expressed here and it just now hit me. Why ever would the director remove something so evocative and memorable from this film? Perhaps it is because "legacy is reductive" (quoting a line from another movie entirely).

Michael Mann might have been bothered by the fact the song, "I Will Find You" is the single most memorable part of the movie. Don't misunderstand me, I think it's a great movie. I can't tell you how many times I recommended it when I worked in the Video Room of a public library. But maybe Mann's artistic sensibilities were bruised because the song overshadows the whole of his work. I don't claim to know for sure, of course, it's just a theory.
