but it was a number one hit for them in 1969, while Denver’s re-recorded version of the same year failed to chart. I don’t think his 1966 version (titled Babe I Hate to Go) was even released as a single.

despite putting it on his 1973 Greatest Hits album.

Carole King cowrote Locomotion. Little Eva had a hit with it in 1962, and King released a version in 1980. Was Little Eva the cover? I guess, technically, but most people would point to the Little Eva or Grand Funk Railroad versions as the hit.
