He wrote many classic lyrics and shows. He was married eight times! (He once said that he doesn’t like marriage but he doesn’t like bachelorhood, either.) In spite of his tremendous success, he had severe financial problems, probably due to his many divorces.

Early in my career, I worked on his last Broadway show, “Dance A Little Closer” which he wrote with Charles Strouse, (“Annie”). Although there are a few good songs in the show, it was a flop and closed on opening night. The producers even cancelled the opening night party to save money. Broadway wags called it “Close A Little Faster!” Regardless, here’s a lovely ballad from the original cast recording..
