Been covered multiple times, too. So, I'm not the only one.
Had a reputation, for a while, that it was about heroin. But, the guy who wrote it denied that, emphatically.
It's interesting structurally, as there are no verses. It's just the chorus 4 times, and a bridge.
I can't think of another song that did that. (It's kind of the opposite of The Beatles' "Come Together" which is all verses with no chorus, just the same lyric ending each verse.)
