Some timeless wisdom from my long-gone grandfather

My wife and I are going through our--to quote George Carlin--"STUFF."

In one small book of wisdom to our elder daughter, there were bits of rhymes (some quite clever, but all in German) from her then-classmates, but there was, to our great surprise, one page from my grandfather, her great-grandfather. Typical of someone who was either 100 years old at the time, or else very close to it. He wrote what he said was one of his favorite sayings:

"Time is a tailor, specializing in alterations."

And that was a pretty funny Carlin bit. Reminds me of every time I make a trip to the East Coast.

11. He pulled himself out of the Great Depression not by his bootstraps, but by his wit

At the age of 35, he was trying to support his family by taking a dime per kid per day to bring the children of better-off families to school. Finally, in his forties, someone from a Madison Avenue advertising agency met him, marveled at his wit, and brought him aboard. His wit never diminished, and his luck changed.

At age 99, he sent out a Christmas card to everyone with a photo of himself, looking very much his age. His caption:

Compliments of the Seasoned

At age 80, he took up painting as a hobby. His impression of a boardroom in session:

Now, THOSE are some genes I am proud to carry, and have passed on!
