Thats the last one
Thats the last Ill ever type that word in the lounge.
Its been 2 and a half weeks since he left us.
For those of you that were dedicated followers of our friend Bob - SalmonChantedEvenings weekly posts, youll know that I very often wrote that single one word response and very, very few times did I ever add anything else.
In a private chat, I explained to Bob where that came from and what it meant to me. The origin is actually rather obscure, its from a cartoon from the 60s, probably from the Bullwinkle series or maybe Underdog or something like that wherein theres a car race going on and they show the crowd of maybe 40 or 50 people in a grandstand. And as the hero goes by, the crowd lets out a collective YAY!
But its not an enthusiastic YAY, but rather a dead pan, monotonal word. It is as if they have gotten completely bored with the race and their expression is as if to say. oh look, here comes the same guy at the front again! Ho hum.
I explained to him that the sentiment wasnt that I was bored with what he put up every Sunday but rather its the YAY of predictable expectations and excellence.
And since he had such a wonderful sense of humor, he thought that was funny as fuck, so much so that he even used that on my birthday. Instead of saying, happy birthday Paul, he would just simply type YAY! On my Facebook page. Because thats the kind of guy he was.
I said yay to my friend Bob, every Sunday or as many as I could, because he did produce such predictable excellence.
I dont know how many of you have ever put up a thread with a dozen or more photographs, but its tedious work and it takes dedication to make sure that he never repeated himself which I never caught him doing.
He amused us all, and he brought us beauty and joy for years
And he was my friend
And even though I never met him
Now hes gone
And I will miss him
Let the universe take your essence back, old man. May your stardust become a new star one day.
Rest in peace, Bob

(98,284 posts)And sweet tribute of a sort.
I think the 'Yay crowd" might have been from the cartoon 'Tom Slick" but it could have been either of the two you mentioned.
I, too, miss Bob (SCE) and his Sunday LOLcats, it was my favorite part of Sunday mornings, one of the things that made me stop lurking so I could rec his posts every week.
Hope you are holding up okay, I finally got an apartment in Maine and am glad to be back on the east coast, where I had not considered returning to until a couple years ago. I just hope we can keep our country for another hundred years or so. I am glad to be able to help vote concerned susan out of office, though.
A HERETIC I AM

(98,284 posts)Congrats on the road show gig. I knew some guys who did that a while back. They tried to get me on as summer crew while I was in college back in the 90s, one had been MY trainee several years prior. Funny story, I hired on for a student job at my college for a Moody Blues concert and when the trucks pulled in, this is where the long story starts but I'll spare you for now, turns out two were old friends from my driving days, brothers, one of which was my trainee when he got out of the Marines. He had such a sweet gig, I was almost jealous.
Enjoy, I'll tell you the long and funny story another day when I have time... if you're interested.

(5,287 posts)SCE brought true joy to my life. And certainly to all of DU. Im only on DU sporadically, but the Sunday Morning LOLcats was always a big draw for me. In fact, several years ago I made a meme for him using the Dos Equis guy saying something like I dont always log into DU, but when I do, its to read SalmonChantedEvenings Sunday LOLcats. He seemed touched. One of my best DU memories ever.
RIP, SCE
