Monroeville Mall where the last Dead movie by George Romero is being bought by Walmart.
The thing is both Malls have asked for PA money to tear down the Malls. That includes Wal-Mart,

(7,667 posts)Built in 1960. Still operating, but struggling. It had been anchored by some of the bigs - Sears, Penney's, Nordstrom's and others. All have moved out. Barnes and Noble survives along with a number of smaller stores.

(7,799 posts)I remember always stopping there as a kid when the family took a trip to Pittsburgh. Century III - is that the one in West Mifflin?
Here in Harrisburg they are tearing down the Harrisburg Mall (not sure if demolition is complete yet or not). And the Colonial Park Mall is all but dead. They're still trying to figure out what to do with it.
When I moved here 36 Years ago, there were 4 malls in the immediate area. Now with Colonial Park dying, that will leave just 1 left - Capital City Mall. It seems to still do OK but one of the anchor stores is JC Penney and that store never has many cars in the parking lot outside it. Wouldn't be surprised to see that mall gone in a few years as well .

(7,799 posts)It's been close to 10 years since the last time I visited the Altoona area so I really don't know how the mall is doing there (the Logan Valley Mall).
I just did a search and it looks like Macy's closed there earlier this year, leaving them with a single anchor store: JC Penney. From their website, it looks like only about half the stores are occupied, so it's probably not going to last much longer either.

(35,004 posts)BIG mall only a few stores are left. We went in this morning, I have not actually been in anything like that since COVID. It was actually delightful. Staff was sparse but just so good.
It was fun because they took a load of time helping us and we had fun with it and them. My husband is a retired doc and wants to go back to work, does not care much for the farm work so a nice new but cheaper suit was in line. I cannot remember a better time in any kind of store like that. They were happy, we were happy and I bet we would have looked for something cheaper if not, it was already way way on sale. We knew they knew we knew but it was just such a good vibe all around and really it has been a very long time since we have spent a little money. Helping each other out. No plans for this one to come down, it is being built up again somehow. It seems here that most stores have stayed open and just changed in different ways. I normally stay away from all of it but that is what it looks like here, just beginning to move around and figure it all out.
Into my old blue jeans I have barn work to do sometime today. Happy at a good people experience, made our day.

(12,370 posts)Our first mall was Northway Mall. I think that's still standing, but it's been converted to big box stores. Then Ross Park Mall opened when I was in college. I think it's still there.

(9,358 posts)It has seven stores left inside. Fortunately for it, there is a big grocery store, and one of the few remaining Barnes and Nobles in town, so it is hanging in there.

(74,939 posts)The one near Kankakee, IL is all but dead. The department stores are all closed.
A couplee jewelry stores, an optical store, a few specialty shops & shoe stores and a 16 screen movie theater.
A few winters ago, I wanted to buy Chanel #5 for my wife at Christmas. The website said the JC Penny's was open at that mall. Nope; shuttered.
So, I go on the website again and go about 15 miles up the state highway to the mall in Matteson. That store is open.
Nope again. In fact, triple Nope. No Penny's, the mall is not only closed but there was no mall anymore! It was razed totally.
Used to like that mall. They had a haut couture men's clothing store called Dei Giovanni. Bought a lot of cool clothes & shoes there. But, they tore the whole thing down.

(2,378 posts)I live in Pittsburgh as you know, and all these 'former hang outs, former BASTIONS of Christmas and other holidays' are either sizing down or closing all together.
Everyone sits in front of their computers and orders from Amazon. I think the two year hit from the Covid pandemic changed society in so many ways. This is one of them. We are a nation of COUCH POTATOES.
