I've lived in 11 states and three different countries but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else that where I'm living now.
I live in Coronado, Ca. across the bay from San Diego. We're an island city with a population of around 20,000 people. Being an island, were surrounded by water so that means beaches, boating, and great views. It's about a 15 minute drive to downtown San Diego or 30 minutes to just about anywhere in the county. The weather is mild year-round making it comfortable to wear a lot of people wear shorts in the winter. There are plenty of things to do and see as well as the availability of different entertainment venues. In the San Diego area, we have some of the best universities/colleges/hospitals/healthcare in the nation.
In short, everything I need is available to me in the area.

(1,962 posts)Last time I was there was 11 months ago. Love that place. I'd be surprised if one can buy even a small, crappy house with no ocean view on that island for less than 500K, and I'd imagine anything remotely nice is 750K and up. That would be my guess.
I live in AZ cause it's reasonably cheap, I own a house here, and my partner is from here (and also owns a house here) and has a kid who's only 19 and not on his own yet. We'll likely move to California once he can take care of himself/gets his own place, most likely No. Cal though.

(948 posts)Home prices are high in Coronado because of two factors.
1. We have limited land space to build and that makes what is available expensive.
2. Location, location, location. Given the choice of living in Coronado or somewhere else in San Diego County most people, IMO, would choose Coronado.
Home prices for the smallest homes start around $1 million.
I'm not rich but I was able to buy my condo in 2002 just as housing prices started rising. Since then, it's value has more than doubled. I could sell and live comfortably somewhere else but I'm not giving up living here unless I'm forced to. It's expensive to live here but it's worth every penny.

(1,962 posts)But then I thought maybe, since much of it was originally built up quite awhile ago (30's and 40's IIRC), maybe there could possibly be some old/small/run down places still around. But yeah, 1M doesn't surprise me at all. I'm well aware of those two factors you mentioned. I'd say I've been there at least 15 times over the course of my life, one time was for my uncle's funeral when I was a wee lad.

(547 posts).......Jobs or other MAGA folk. Washington State's politics, however, are a perfect fit for this aged hippy and environmentalist. The city is a good size, the weather suits me and the missus, as we like to experience the four seasons, and, as retirees, we have come to value stability of place more than we used to. That said, we do travel at least twice a year for a month or so, usually to Europe, just to get away from here and enjoy a "Rick Steve's" kind of experience with new people and new places. No plans to move.

(43,094 posts)About 70 percent are liberal, or at least Democratic, and you can make an easy acquaintance with many while just strolling down Pacific Avenue. On a nice weekend day, there'll be plenty of buskers there, too.
Then there's the Pacific Ocean, about ¾-mile from our house. Always some surfing going on, some pretty damned good if the surf's breaking at Steamer Lane. And nearest to us, between The Point and The Hook, lots of dogs walking their humans.
Plenty of good, independent restaurants, burger joints, coffee shops and bodegas.
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, with the Giant Dipper. 'Nuff said
Reasonably cool cops. Or maybe I should just say "Reasonable cops."
I wiish I'd been born here instead of moving here 16 years ago. Probably would've made a big difference in my life.

(4,425 posts)I've lived here on and off since 2001. I'm Canadian, my wife is American, and life's path just brought us here. I've always said to both my Canadian and American friends/family, that if a Canadian would be the most comfortable, it would be here.
Sorry other places. Just my feelings.
And it doesn't hurt that we rent a very comfortable little house, not too big at all, super cozy with an expansive 200 degree view from Kent - Seattle. We get a ton of spectacular sunsets!
