My Grandparents lived six blocks from Connie Mack back in the day. Used to get into games free after the third inning.

(24,581 posts)We grew up in Washington Hgts (not that far from their stadium) so the Yankees were a natural fit.
Then The Mets were formed when I was a kid (9). By the time I started reading Mad Magazine (12?) they were merciless on The Mets & Stengel!
Somewhere in the early '80s I switched to The Mets. If The Yankees were in the play offs, or WS I'd root for them. Where I lived for a bunch of years we passed Yankee Std along the elevated subway train.
But Mets vs Yankees I root for The Mets.
It was a thrill to see them win in '86. Been to their and Yankees ticker tape parades. Fabulous!

(43,094 posts)since 1969, if not before. I've almost always sided with the underdog, and they were certainly that for their first six seasons. Then Tom & Jerry -- and Hodges -- started to bring them around a bit in '68, and '69 was, of course, amazin'. Truly. The images of Tug McGraw throwing his glove 30 feet in the air, Koosman leaping into the arms of Jerry Grote (or was it J.C. Martin?) and that unbelievable Game 5 catch by Ron Swoboda (still the greatest catch I've ever seen) are forever frozen in my mind.
If they can't hurt the Dodgers in any way, I'll still pull for the Mets.

(300 posts)Been a fan since the 1960's. Through all the bad years, never gave up hope. One day, they will make it to the SuperBowl. Or not, I will still be a Lions fan, either way.

(948 posts)I've followed the San Diego Padres baseball team since they entered the MLB in 1969. Every year I hope this will be the year they win the World Series but unfortunately, the let me down.
Same goes with the Chargers. I supported them when my parents moved to the San Diego area in 1966. When they moved to LA, I was disappointed but after supporting them for over 50 years I couldn't switch teams. The haven't won a Super Bowl, yet, bit I still have hope.

(25,605 posts)Florida Gators (first football love, watching them from the time I was an infant)
Jacksonville Jaguars - season tickets for 20 years
SF 49ers - lived near there for 20 years, starting in my teens. Got to see Joe Montana a bunch - awesome!!!
SF Giants - See above and add Barry Bonds and Will the Thrill Clark.
Dallas Cowboys - mom was from that area and this was her team. Don't like them nearly as much in the Jerry Jones era, but still like them to do good - for mom. If game is between Dallas and SF, however - I'll go for SF.
Jaguars are my home team and I root for them against anyone. -

While I enjoy the championships, I have fonder memories of being a long-suffering Red Sox and Patriots fan.
That even includes the "will Boston ever win again" era of the 80s and 90s.

(455 posts).. yes, they're historically one of the best teams in CFB, but they were often mediocre-to-genuinely TERRIBLE and their coaching was a laughingstock after Bryant died in 1983 until alumni and boosters pitched in and raised hell and a TON of money to get Saban (in 2007) from Miami. Now they're on a precipice again, but we'll see how this season plays out. There is a generation of fans who have no memory of things like losing the Music City bowl to Va Tech and Minnesota, or the debacle of the Three Mikes and a Dennis Coaching Circus.
