Do you get this riddle?

I heard Ari Melber say it to the Australian economist with the blond curly hair that some DUers are familiar with. Anyway, I didn't get it.

Why can't you trust kangaroos with the economy?
Their checks always bounce.

Please explain if you get it.

a cute joke. Referring to the way kangaroos get around, is what I would guess, since bouncing is their primary locomotion.
