The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI was really pissed when Skinner & EarlG allowed Lounge posts on the Greatest Page.
Like, WTF? Lounge posts are frivolous and I come to the GP for news.
Fast forward
10 years? Damned if those GP Lounge posts dont save me from drowning in the surreal reality of living under fascism. I bow down to Admin wisdom and forethought. Bring the trampoline sheep and formerly unloved dog vids! The dumb dad jokes and beautiful photography! And thank you all for finding and sharing the joy.

(13,462 posts)We need to be aware of the former to transform the world into a safer place but we also need the latter to revitalize ourselves for the mission ahead and to remind ourselves what we are making the world safer for.

(12,534 posts)We need the lounge the most.
To get our minds off the heavy stuff. I read a lot of books about WW2 in Europe and they still celebrated birthdays for the kids, played with them and played music and read when they could. Even dancing.

I recently returned to DU after about 16 years (I got kicked off Fascistbøk), and I barely recognize the place. It used to be a lot crazier and much more risqué, with a bunch of flirting.

(29,621 posts)I mean, it was a decade or more ago, but I seem to remember when they first launched the Greatest Page, it was limited to LBM, GD, and any main forum that comes and goes, like GD residential race. Some time after that, they started allowing any post in any forum or group to be rec'ed to the GP. I supported it for the photography contest, but really had a stick up my butt about other "frivolous" content on the GP, because I use the GP like it's a discussion forum.
I also remember a lot more flirting back in the day (I see we joined about the same time). But the truth is, most of us were still young enough to be in the flirting phase of life. I was 36 when I joined up in '04. People in their 60s, 70s, and 80s just don't flirt like we used to!

(42,057 posts)with any woman who was open to it. But, like you said...
I could swear I made the Greatest Page once with a Lounge post. When Enron CEO and convicted criminal Kenneth Lay died, I riffed on it a la Monty Python's "Dead Parrot" bit. The OP went "I wish to complain about this Ken Lay I purchased not 'alf an hour ago from this very boutique!" Other Loungies did the Michael Palin lines from there, and I'd do the rest of John Cleese's lines with references to stock fraud. It was hilarious.
But, that was 19 years and five days ago, so I must be misremembering.

(3,690 posts)It's not that I was pissed. I just wasn't interested. Fast forward and now I seek them out, especially as the last things I read or watch before bed. Nothing like some heart-warming puppy/kitten/horse stories to restore me to the place where I can actually sleep.
