I've had mine for four years and it's been great, especially after I wised-up and bought a dust collector for it.
It's time to replace the knives in it...one side of them is dull, the other has a notch in them because I hit something hard with the planer one day. I'm planning to keep this set of knives for roughing and buy a new set for final finishing. I can change a set of knives REAL quick, so that's not a problem.
I've noticed a few manufacturers of third-party knives for this machine. Are those any good or should I just put a new set of DeWalt knives in it?

(52,069 posts)Besides, I have a place I send the knives off my shop paper cutters to. They charge $15 per edge regardless of how big it is. The planer has three reversible knives, so...$90 to sharpen all three knives. A set of new DeWalt knives is only $80.

(1,154 posts)I have a 90's delta 12 inch they recommend replacing them. I made a jig to go on the belt sander to sharpen them. I use it also to sharpen my grizzly 20 inch planer and the planer knives in my belsaw moulder planer. You can get years out of those knives.
I do swipe them on my oil stone for a final hone takes about 20 minutes to do all 4 knives in the grizzly.
