I just wanted to plug an app called Sky Guide at least for iPhone (sounds like Android version may not be that great) that allows you to just pan your phone around the night sky and it will identify anything; satellites, space station, planets, distant stars and shows the constellations and which stars form them. It can also notify you of events you might want to watch, ISS overhead, best time to see a comet or meteor shower etc. Works without cell or wi-fi so when you are out in the sticks where the star gazing is best you can still answer your questions.

I would have killed to have this app as a kid but certainly enjoy it now with my son.

While I sound like a paid advertisement, I'm not in any way affiliated with the company. I just find it amazing how easy they made it to learn about the night sky.
