DAMN THIS THING IS TASTY!
Haven't had one in a few years.
Figured I'd post a picture in case there's someone who doesn't know what a potato looks like. I haven't been on Facebook for about 7 years, so I miss posting stupid pictures of my stupid food.

(20,945 posts)I eat there a lot too.
I actually recently re-finished our entire dining room set. We've eaten there about 10 times only since the pandemic. My wife works from home, and it's her desk, so it's always cluttered with work stuff.
So I Have to eat in unusual places. LIKE A DAMN ANIMAL!!!!

(20,945 posts)I then made 2 semi-circles out of thin lauan plywood and glued felt to the bottom. They are removable, and protect the table from writing, spills, etc. So it's being used as a desk now,

I have excellent table manners when I eat at a restaurant, but I haven't been inside a damn restaurant since Covid!
The bathtub is a good idea haha!

Bake potato, quarter it but not all the way, open up, add cheese, microwave for 20 seconds to melt cheese.
Then add the sour cream.

(29,197 posts)From the 80s, I remember a short-lived chain of restaurants named The Fresher Cooker, which had a health-conscious theme. They served baked potatoes topped with all sorts of things, which were very good. I once got a baked potato with nothing but sour cream and butter just for something simple and delicious.

I recommend a Nitty Gritty cookbook called "The Well Dressed Potato".
I've enjoyed leftover rib roast with gravy and more over a nice large steaming baked potato.
And there's more.

(13,847 posts)scoop the hot baked potato out of the jacket, mash it with sour cream, pepper, chives (or minced green onion), spoon it back into the potato skin, top with some cheese, and put it back into the oven to melt the cheese.
Mmmmmmm.

(32,194 posts)I bake a couple of good old Idaho baking potatoes and cube them, skins and all, and add sour cream, butter, sliced green onions and bacon bits. Put it in a baking dish, bake at 350°F till it's heated through and top with shredded cheddar for the last few minutes in the oven. It disappears fast.

(5,129 posts)but did you actually bake this potato in the oven, or did you microwave it? Or half-and-half?
I'm sorry. I'll be quiet now.
LuckyCharms
(20,945 posts)I used to buy the plastic wrapped ones and microwave them, but these were just unwrapped potatoes that my wife microwaved.
She told me her technique, but I was distracted and only half listening. I'll go ask her how she did it and respond again in a minute.

(5,129 posts)Microwaved potatoes have that sort of shine to their insides, while *true* baked potatoes are dry and flaky--and much more delicious.
I do enjoy your photos of food, LC, but I have to tell you I am sorely disappointed in this. In fact, I think you should change the title of your OP; "baked" is misleading and frankly untrue in this case.
I feel very sad right now.

(5,129 posts)Put it in the oven until it's soft all the way through? That's much simpler than the fancy microwave shenanigans you had to ask your wife about! A child could make a true baked potato.
And for god's sake don't wrap aluminum foil around it!
Shame on all of you potato microwavers! You don't know what you're missing!
LuckyCharms
(20,945 posts)Let's see...wrap potato in aluminum foil and put in microwave.
Gonna try this.
I'll be right back.

(16,799 posts)Pierce the skin with a fork several times so the potato sort of steams in its own skin, then bake at 450 degrees until it feels squishy. The salt gives it something of a brine and seeps into the potato a little.
Yummers! I'm eating a small salad while I type and a baked potato would go so well. Alas, I got no spuds. Sigh.
LuckyCharms
(20,945 posts)then wrap in a wet paper towel. Microwave for 4 minutes. Flip it over and microwave for another 4 minutes. Check for doneness with by poking a sharp knife into it.

(5,129 posts)Scrub russet and poke a few holes. Put in the oven at whatever temp you like and bake until it smells done. Check it by poking it with that fork--make sure you poke all the way into the center. At 350, depending on the size of your spud, it'll take 45 min to an hour. I like big potatoes, so mine take an hour. Or I bake them at 400 for maybe 1/2 an hour; your nose is your indication of doneness.
The skin will be dry and crisp but not burnt--delicious on its own with butter & sc.

"make sure you poke all the way to the center, depending on the size of your spud."
All kidding aside though...our central air crapped out and it's way too hot to turn the oven on.

For the optimal baked potato experience,Heres how you do it.
Scrub a potato under running water, pat dry, then poke it with a fork a few times, then rub olive oil all over the skin. Bake in an oven till done. The skin will be crispy and delicious and the inside will be soft and fluffy.
On edit: sorry about your a/c. Just ignore what I wrote.
LuckyCharms
(20,945 posts)Scrub a potato with tin foil, ensuring that small pieces of tinfoil get embedded in the potato.
Then, wrap the potato in several layers of tin foil, run it under scalding hot water, and then stab it with a fork several times. Leave the fork embedded in the potato, sticking straight up.
Coat the fork generously with some olive oil.
Put the whole thing in the microwave for 90 minutes.
Did I get that right?
