You Light Up My Life by Debbie Boone. And Love Will Keep Us Together--Captain and Tennille:facepalm
Edited to add- they were good songs but way over played. Honestly, we drove from Pittsburgh to Dallas listening to Muskrat Love on the radio zone we were passing into.

Who never had time for a wife
And he's talkin' with Davy, who's still in the Navy
And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinkin' alone
Oh la de dah di di da da...

(33,643 posts)I'd be updating my post all day if I tried to make a comprehensive list. Most are from the 70's and 80's. I'm sure I'd offend many if I posted them all.
As much as I basically love Zeppelin, The Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Creedence, Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, Bad Company, Kansas, Boston, John Mellencamp, and omfg the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac ... there's a LOT of songs by these bands I could EASILY never hear again.
And just about anything by an 80's one or two hit wonder artist. Think 'Take on Me' or 'Take My Breath Away' or 'Voices Carry', to name a few.

(58,561 posts)It's a masterpiece.
For a song to be one I never want to hear again, it has to be one I always disliked.
Not one I loved the first time I heard it.
You think something's overplayed? Just switch stations, or turn off the radio.

(33,643 posts)You think you wake up excited tomorrow to see the Mona Lisa for the 501st time?
highplainsdem
(58,561 posts)often than that in my life. I don't recall ever being excited to see it. But I don't think it's any worse because I have seen it so often before.
Most of the times we hear music it's as background music, unless we're listening to a specific record or watching TV or video or a film for that artist/song.
All the previous times I've heard a song don't stop me from being able to focus on a great song again and still appreciate why it's great.
A bad song that gets airplay, though, will have me switching channels or switching off.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)But there's just a LOT of songs, this one included, where if I never freaking heard them again in my life, I would not miss them, nor probably purposefully play them again. Maybe if someone told me "gosh I've never even heard 'Stairway to Heaven?"
debm55
(51,580 posts)albums. It was long and most stations didn't play it that often. As it took up too much airtime. Though they did overplay Freebird and American Pie.

(33,643 posts)I was purposefully playing LZ IV.
I'm just saying if I never heard it again, I'd be perfectly fine with that, and I'm likely to skip it or change the station at this point because I'm just tired of it.

Side note, nothing makes me feel old faster than hearing a song on an oldies station that came out when I was in high school.

I agree with the puke - inducing Piña Colada Song
I love J Geils band, but Freeze Frame and Centerfold were a Wrong Turn.
I think weve heard enough of Michael McDonald choking on his own vomit to never hear any of it again.
I agree with Garth on Kenny G - its dental drill music.
And, I am prepared to circle the Village Square in a hay wagon and be pelted with rotten eggs and tomatoes for this: I loved Janis Joplin at first, but, as a traitor to my generation, I just cant listen to her now.
Edited to add: I think we can give Foreigner a rest. The epitome of commercial radio dreck.

(51,580 posts)was played on a loop. American Pie was great when it first came out. However, it was very long and overplayed. AM music did not to teens. It played to the mass. And that's what we got. Only when FM stations came out was there more of a diversitiy of music.

(68,282 posts)I think it's sad. When I was a kid the radio was interesting! There were new releases, new songs all the time. Music was evolving. You'd hear a catchy song by a band you'd never heard of and go to the record store and buy the album.
I was driving with a 19-year old the other day and his personal playlist was a collection of songs from the 1970s and 80s. Think about that. It would be like if we, in 1971, were listening only to music released in the 1920s and 30s.
Where is the new music? What an impoverishment of our culture.
debm55
(51,580 posts)certain songs. Remember when radio stations would take call ins for songs? My songs in the OP were very popular but even back then they were like teen songs.
yardwork
(68,282 posts)Sure, there was corruption and graft controlling what artists got recording contracts, but still, every day new songs were released, new artists were introduced. We'd be excited that "a new album by so and so is out - I heard the new single last night and it sounded great!" Or, "I heard the new single by so and so and I don't think I like it..." - big argument would ensue: "No, it's good! I like their new direction!"
Now, popular music is nothing but reruns from fifty years ago.

How much hip-hop do you listen to?
How big a fan are you of Taylor Swift or Harry Styles or Rihanna?
Do you like auto tune, or do you hate it? Most DUers seem to hate it.

It's a shame that independent radio stations, and DJs who could decide what to play, are almost nonexistent now. Unfortunately that's likely to get worse with AI being pushef into radio now - I've posted about that. Plus there's more and more AI-generated music, with one company alone having uploaded 15 million AI-generated tracks to Spotify.
But there's still new music out there. Genuine music from real artists, as opposed to AI crap.
I won't fault that 19-year-old you mentioned for listening to classic rock, though. Not only is it new to him, but it ISN'T comparable to a Baby Boomer when young listening only or mostly to music from the 1920s and 1930s. There was so much more popular music in the '60s-'80s, from a wide array of diverse artists, many of them pushing the envelope and incorporating other musical genres. It was an explosion of creativity, enabled by a huge audience that still bought albums, and a large number of radio stations catering to diverse tastes.
And much of it was great music. Not all of it, but much of it.
