This event was disturbing at the time but my wife's description is funny.
I get esophageal spasms. It feels like your esophagus is going to explode. Hold on, it's gonna be a bumpy ride. It hurts like hell.
I got one the other night at the kitchen sink. Little did I know but there is this thing called the Vagus nerve and it can shut you down. This spasm was bad and would not stop. Next thing I know I am on waking up on the floor. Now I need to explain why I am on the floor. I did not get dizzy or light headed just collapsed. However the spasm was gone! I went to the doctor in the morning. I was lucky I did not hit my head. I said to the doc, so when I get a spasm I should sit down. Um yea. He also said old people sometimes get Vegus nerve reactions on the toilet. So I have that to look forward to. This getting old ain't for the weak.
My wife said "I knew something was really wrong because I heard all the crashing but no cussing." That made me laugh.

I found on the internets that if you lie down on your back and breathe slowly while looking to the left or right, serious left or right, without moving your head until you yawn, you will reset your Vegus nerve.
Sounds weird, but it works for her.

(3,484 posts)Her doctor was no help. I looked it up and suggested she try.
It seems to work. She is 76 and over time the attacks are less frequent.
Now, on her own, if she senses the dizziness, she lies down and is back in action within 10 to fifteen minutes.
We had to leave parties because of Vagus nerve issues. Still do, but not as frequently.

(7,439 posts)I suspect yours got too low, your BP dropped without blood pumping and you passed right out.
yes, sitting down seems your best option.

(162 posts)I have been suffering with it also. Not as bad as you, it seems. But enough to take my breath away when it happens. i mentioned it to my primary care physician and he suggested peppermint oil as soon as it starts. I got a spray bottle and shoot it down my throat as soon as it happens, and it stopped it immediately. I use it every time I get a spasm, and it always works. I also have a dry hacking cough sometimes and it cures that.
Who would have thunk.
