Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsLast week someone posted about how we used to dress up for Easter.
I was going through old photos today and came across this one. Easter Sunday 1956, my sister and I. I was 6 and she was 8.

(24,255 posts)My mom made all our dresses..the style was the same only individual colors and she even made her own dress. It was a big deal with family and lots of food and games for all of my sisters and cousins. Those were the good ol days, for sure. You look good in your Easter best 🤗

(51,330 posts)Spring coat,(Easter must have been in March that year) and I bet one of those frilly, itchy dresses. I notice the new shoes too. You and your sister are very cute.

(29,356 posts)We had some dresses I just loved and I was looking at the pictures not too long ago. My grandfather always got us corsages, and this was just for dinner at their house, with all the good china. I do miss it, it was a way to welcome spring.
We dressed up for all holidays and I don't think we (I hope we don't) have a picture of the dark green velour outfits with knee breeches and lace jabots my grandmother sewed us for Thanksgiving one year. We looked like two little Ben Franklins.

(113,979 posts)I looked like a lampshade. I don't recall wearing the confection again.
I think the whole thing started when most women had 2 changes of clothing, the everyday dress and the Sunday best. On Easter, she debuted the next year's Sunday best. The old everyday dress was shot and ready to be cut up into kid clothes, towels, rags, and quilt fabric. The old Sunday best was looking just a tad shabby and became the everyday dress.
