(51,705 posts)French and Crullers were the same. Aren't Crullers shaped long ways?
hippywife

(2,050 posts)I grew up in a family of Bakers, three generations of them
I spent a lot of time in the bakery and they even have a pic of me leaning too far over into a huge mixing bowl of chocolate chip cookie mix
I had to really lean into it to get to the dough and went too far
So the pic is just my legs/shoes sticking up from the bowl with my Sunday go to church clothes on
Otherwise its crullers, a gift to us from an unknown maestro
You can find them at some local bakerys around here and at krispy crème but we dont have any of those within 30-40 miles from here

(51,705 posts)glazed and have raisins in them? We call them crullers. Heavy arguments over the name at my school. One teacher even brought in pictures from the internet to show they were crullers and there was no such thing as French donuts. Needless to say, we thought she was a little out there, but I guess she was right.

(51,705 posts)He had all kinds--custard, lemon , Bavarian cream. French donuts. glazed, etc. I can remember kids and moms running out of their houses to get a box of donuts. We usually got the mixed donut box. Yes, I remember people yelling "the Donut Man is here"

(2,050 posts)My house is full of bakery equipment from back in the day
Big stainless milk cans, big copper bowls about one foot deep by two feet in diameter with big handles, I dont know if for mixing or cooking as theyve been polished
Every conceivable size of cast iron pans up to two foot wide, one of those mixers and its paddles and bowl about six feet tall, lots of the utensils they used including two aluminum rolling pins around three feet long
Etc, theres more put away
..
I dont donuts very often these days except the ones I mentioned maybe 2-3 a month
They stay as a special treat that way
What the bakery did was give me a phobia for white cake with white icing, its like fingernails on a blackboard to me, I must have eaten way too much as a youngun

(16,404 posts)Visited aunt and uncle in NJ back in the late '60s. On a trip into "the City" we stopped at one of the corner donut shops and bought a couple dozen to take home. Aunt said I couldn't have one until after dinner because I'd never want to leave the shop otherwise. She was right. Long time ago, haven't been back since, but I can still taste those donuts. Yummm!
