My dad taught our dog to bark when he subtly moved a finger by his side. He used this to great effect, demonstrating to friends that she could “add” 2+2 (by moving his finger 4 times in a row), etc. Best episode was when showing her off to my grandmother one day he asked her what the square root of 16 is, and my grandmother jumped in trying to stop it, objecting sympathetically to the complicated problem our poor dog was faced with.

I love german shepherds, they love to please! My old girl was the sweetest thing ever, when I was sick, she'd lay beside me and nuzzle me. When my body was trying to dislodge the developing embryo that became my son, and I was stuck lying down for 4 months, she only left my side to eat and do her business outside. When I could finally walk safely again, she was so happy, jumped around barking with joy! I miss that wonderful girl.
