IMO, most newborn and very young mammals are absolutely adorable. Most baby birds are not very cute at first.

I was always told as a child to not touch the baby birds/animals because if they smelled of a human's touch, the mom would abandon them. I'm so glad it's not true!

highly developed sense of smell.

Notable exception: carrion eaters. They are attracted to rotting flesh!


Most birds, if they do abandon the nest or babies, it's because they became overly spooked by human interference.
My personal experience is that it takes quite a lot to scare them off. The parental instinct is strong!
