from our house. There is a house directly across from us and the tracks are behind her house but mostly it is all trees and pasture land. The trains come through frequently and have to blow those horns on either side of our house as the tracks cross the roads. I almost don't hear them sometimes but others they seem really loud but I do love them. I have no real reason to love them, I just do.

“Both Ends of the Train”?

It’s kind of bluegrass, by a group called Blue Highway. Really fine song, with a high, lonesome sound.

My dad worked for the railroad. I think of him every time I hear a train whistle.

It's my preferred mode of travel between Providence, RI, and NYC, especially. When my boys were small, my aunt from lower CT would hop on the train to RI for wonderful visits. All my memories of trains are good ones - even when getting "stuck" for hours in a very crowded train after Christmas break and heading back to school.

Late at night when the night is quiet, I can hear the whistle of the last trains coming into the town. It's always so plaintive.

an approaching train, the click-clack as it passes, both were peaceful sounds. Of course I never knew any better.

After 10 years they put in an automatic crossing, so no more whistles.
