Desperation.
It was driving me nuts. It had been a year. I did what we did in college. Hair in a ponytail at the top of your head. Cut. Scissors weren't very sharp, yet it worked after a few attempts. Took 3 inches off.

(94,540 posts)Really works. It will give you some layers if you don't mind those.
I am sick of tangling in my hair at night. It was waaay below my shoulders.

(6,212 posts)I have to cut mine and would like to try it the way you did.
Sounds easy.

(94,540 posts)Some layers and bottom pretty even.
It is far better than it was. It feels healthier, Cat. Try a few small cuts at a time to see how it looks.

(6,212 posts)I took the plunge and did it. It turned out great. I just had to work on the back a little to make it a little shorter.. I went to shoulder length. I feel so much better.

(94,540 posts)I am so glad it worked for you.
I kind of screwed up the back a bit. However the front looks great!

(4,983 posts)Now I love my Covid hair. It billows out, it flips and waves, it falls down my back and over my shoulders. I am Rita Hayworth.
Yeah, I'll get it cut soon. I'm 76 years old. Just having a little throwback fun.

(11,003 posts)I've done this 3 times now and it really does work. After I cut a few inches off, I grab a top section and cut that a little shorter than the rest and the result is layered hair.
Usually my hair grows fast and it hasn't been lately so I'm probably overdue for a trim. The next time I'll try to snap some photos to share.

(94,540 posts)The back is an issue. I wish I could shorten that more.
I am going to try again. The cut I did gives you some layers as well. Let me know how it goes, Niagara.

(11,003 posts)I don't think there are too many mistakes that can happen cutting this way as long as I'm going slow.
It certainly seems to work out well and I will definitely let you know how it goes.

(123,804 posts)I did trim the bangs a couple of times, but my hair is about 1.5 inches below my eyebrows now. It's also below my ears and below my shirt collar.
sheshe2
(94,540 posts)I keep my hair up in clips during the day to keep it out of my face. However summer was a B trying to keep it off me at night. Clips would rip my hair out if I tried.
I have no trimming instructions for you, TT. Bangs are easy, the rest is a puzzle.
Happy New Year

(128,089 posts)Wayyyyy back in the dark ages, the shag was easy. Grab all your hair, pull it straight up, and cut straight across. Came down in a very nice shag.
One time, Many years later, I had it done by a friend who was a hairdresser. She had two of her clients in the shop when we did this. She pulled it up, and cut off almost 18 inches. I thought the clients were going to faint. And it was still part way down my back! I wear it MUCH shorter these days! No longer tangles in my collars. And kitty cannot sleep on it!
Enjoy your new 'do!

(94,540 posts)My hair has been long but never that long.

(128,089 posts)No matter what we do to it, I remind people, "it's hair. It will grow back."
Sandy and Richard Riccardi did one of their parodies on this very topic. "Let It Grow", to the music from "Frozen".Would post it, but my computer won't let me link.

(10,493 posts)Last haircut was in February and my hair grows fast so I need 6-8 inches taken off and the cut reshaped. Im trying a new salon thats pricey but at this point money is no object.
I say myself on a zoom party last night and I look like a crazy lady. Ive given up coloring my hair and Im too old to wear unkempt long gray hair.

(98,379 posts)My hair is a minimum of 30 inches, I cut it to between collar and shoulder length 5.5 years ago. I was thinking of doing it again soon. I have to be able to tie it up at night, I never sleep on my back, I just throw the whole hank over my pillow and that's it. I wouldn't know what to do with short hair!

(7,398 posts)"Manes by Mel" is a Youtube series on cutting curly hair by a very funny woman, and her "seester". I've tried their methods and they work great. Very entertaining.

(13,692 posts)It's not a whole lot different than the method I use but their way looks easier. I'll watch this when my next haircut is due.

(7,398 posts)I tried the unicorn method first (single pony tail on top of head) and it made a long v-shaped mullet. Then I tried the pigtail method (below), and it came out MUCH better.

(27,526 posts)Mr. Bayard cut it to shoulder-length for me last summer, and its already half-way down my back again. Grows super fast, but fine textured. I did finally decide to let my bangs grow out that I've had for eons. Its driving me nuts having it in my eyes all the time for now.
Wonder if this would work for me?
sheshe2
(94,540 posts)See if you like it. You will get a layered look.
Good luck.
Bayard
(27,526 posts)Did a little layering. Just hope its not like the time my sister cut it for me. I went to work the next day, and people told me I looked like Rod Stewart.

(16,639 posts)go super irritated and just did a chop. Didn't even use hair scissors.
It's long and shapeless again. Not sure what to do with it now.
LisaL
(47,329 posts)Put it into a pony tail and cut it off. I have good scissors because I also use them to shorten my bangs between haircuts (I shortened by bangs between haircuts even before covid). It came out nice and even. I don't think anyone could tell it was not a professional haircut.
