Rachel Maddow looks at the plea deal the Justice Department crafted in the only other case that is similar to the current situation with Donald Trump, and why giving up the possibility of prison could be worth avoiding a U.S. president serving from behind bars. - Aired on 06/12/2023.

(94,439 posts)Not serving won't shut his mouth, won't stop his hateful rhetoric and won't stop another J6. He is a clear and present danger to America. HE SOLD US OUT.
I know many adore Rachel, She has to stop this BS!
He has compromised our National Security and the security of our allies. He broke the law and his oath of office and Maddow wants him to walk away as a free man.
NO!

2. Plays squarely into the hands of those who claim his prosecution is solely political.
(I liked the idea originally. I understand now why it cannot hold together.)

The crime is too serious, plus Trump even if not president would still be a loud voice that would continue to be influential in politics, speaking for other candidates he endorses, etc.
He needs to go to jail for decades.
Maybe cutting his potential sentence down to 10 years instead of 100 or more would be worth it to avoid a trial, but nothing short of that in my view.

(541 posts)It was national security secrets. People's lives were ended because of his carelessness.
As it were, Agnew's (and Nixon's) get-out-of-jail cards were not sufficient to deter others from re-committing similar crimes as top politicians. Look at how many felons were indicted from Reagan's and GHWBush's administration.
No. Make an example of TFG. No quarters given. He should live the rest of his (hopefully short) remaining life behind bars, in solitary.
He should be lucky that he doesn't get the Mussolini treatment.

(245,301 posts)No internet, no podcasts, no newsletters - we've heard more than enough of him in the past seven years for several lifetimes. And especially now that we know the depth and incorrigibility of his crimes, we have learned that nothing else has worked. As was said on MSNBC tonight, he'll keep on talking and issuing threats even though he is ignorant regarding what he's talking about.
