Why banning Trump from public office could tempt DOJ on a no-jail plea deal - Rachel Maddow - MSNBC

Rachel Maddow looks at the plea deal the Justice Department crafted in the only other case that is similar to the current situation with Donald Trump, and why giving up the possibility of prison could be worth avoiding a U.S. president serving from behind bars. - Aired on 06/12/2023.

1. She needs to stop with the plea deal bullshit.

Not serving won't shut his mouth, won't stop his hateful rhetoric and won't stop another J6. He is a clear and present danger to America. HE SOLD US OUT.

I know many adore Rachel, She has to stop this BS!

He has compromised our National Security and the security of our allies. He broke the law and his oath of office and Maddow wants him to walk away as a free man.

NO!

5. I couldn't agree more. We never need to hear anything from him again.

We've heard more than enough from him for several lifetimes.

2. And Trump agrees to disqualification from public office for all time?

1. Of dubious enforceability.

2. Plays squarely into the hands of those who claim his prosecution is solely political.

(I liked the idea originally. I understand now why it cannot hold together.)

4. When San Diego's Mayor Bob Filner took a plea deal, it was similar and here's the rub:

He agreed to house arrest and not holding public office again-- though that could legally only be for the duration of his probation, not forever. Filner went down for sexually harassing a subordinate.

3. This is not an appropriate deal.

Agnew got that deal but his was garden variety corruption-not stealing and sharing U.S.military and nuclear secrets.

The crime is too serious, plus Trump even if not president would still be a loud voice that would continue to be influential in politics, speaking for other candidates he endorses, etc.

He needs to go to jail for decades.

Maybe cutting his potential sentence down to 10 years instead of 100 or more would be worth it to avoid a trial, but nothing short of that in my view.

6. And we can hope that after not hearing from him for 10 years we'll lose the hateful rhetoric

But, given the severity of his crimes, I'd vote for life. The Rosenbergs faced much worse.

7. Nope.

It was national security secrets. People's lives were ended because of his carelessness.

As it were, Agnew's (and Nixon's) get-out-of-jail cards were not sufficient to deter others from re-committing similar crimes as top politicians. Look at how many felons were indicted from Reagan's and GHWBush's administration.

No. Make an example of TFG. No quarters given. He should live the rest of his (hopefully short) remaining life behind bars, in solitary.

He should be lucky that he doesn't get the Mussolini treatment.

8. I agree that prison is the only way to shut him down for good, nothing else has worked

No internet, no podcasts, no newsletters - we've heard more than enough of him in the past seven years for several lifetimes. And especially now that we know the depth and incorrigibility of his crimes, we have learned that nothing else has worked. As was said on MSNBC tonight, he'll keep on talking and issuing threats even though he is ignorant regarding what he's talking about.
