House Democrat Calls on Kristi Noem To Resign Over ICE Lies

Bernie Sanders, Delia Ramirez, Ilhan Omar, Pramila Jayapal, and Rashida Tlaib reacted with outrage to The Intercept's investigation.

Members of Congress expressed outrage at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deceiving eight men who were recently deported to South Sudan, as revealed earlier this week in an investigation by The Intercept. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., called the expulsions “abhorrent.”

Before the men boarded a plane in May, officials told them that they were being sent on a short trip from Texas to another ICE facility in Louisiana. Many hours later, the plane landed in Djibouti.

The men — convicted criminals who had already served significant prison sentences — were held in a shipping container for weeks, shackled at the legs, on a U.S. military base in Djibouti. This past weekend, they were expelled to the violence-plagued nation of South Sudan.

The ICE deception revealed by The Intercept highlights the lengths to which the U.S. government will go to further its anti-immigrant agenda and deport people to so-called third countries to which they have no connections.

What to know about South Sudan, where U.S. apparently sent migrants on deportation flight
World Updated on May 21, 2025 7:29 PM EDT

snip*
If South Sudan is the confirmed destination, that means people from Vietnam, Mexico and elsewhere are being sent to a nation they have no link to, thousands of miles from where they want to be. Vietnam’s list of its embassies in Africa shows the closest one to South Sudan is in Tanzania, over 800 miles away.

South Sudan’s police spokesperson, Maj. Gen. James Monday Enoka, told The Associated Press that no migrants had arrived and if they did, they would be investigated and “redeported to their correct country” if not South Sudanese.

Some in the capital, Juba, worried their country would become a kind of dumping ground. “Those people who are deported, some of them are criminals, they have been involved in crimes. So once they are brought to South Sudan, that means that criminal activities will also increase,” said Martin Mawut Ochalla, 28.

snip* This would not be the first time the Trump administration has pressured South Sudan over deportees. Recently, the administration abruptly revoked the visas of all South Sudanese, saying their government failed to accept the return of its citizens “in a timely manner.” South Sudan pushed back, saying the person in question was Congolese, but later said it would allow him to enter “in the spirit of maintaining friendly relations” with the U.S.

South Sudan’s government has struggled since independence from Sudan in 2011 to deliver many of the basic services of a state. Years of conflict have left the country heavily reliant on aid that has been hit hard by another Trump administration decision — sweeping cuts in foreign assistance.

Resign, or any and all evidence of criminal behavior and crimes against humanity (and human trafficking falls in that bucket) will be referred to the ICC. Let ICE Noem know she will face justice either here or at The Hague, where a Convicted Felon pardon would not be recognized.
