Take that, Elon Musk! Susan Crawford defeats Brad Schimel to keep a progressive majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court
The Wisconsin State Supreme Court will continue to have a progressive majority for the next few years, voters decided on Tuesday, giving Democratic-backed candidate Susan Crawford a decisive victory over Republican-backed candidate Brad Schimel.
With 70% of votes counted (as of press time), Crawford had 55.9% of the vote (895,053 votes) while Schimel had 44.1% of the vote (705,923).
“The officially nonpartisan contest between Republican-backed Brad Schimel and Democratic-supported Susan Crawford will determine the balance of power on a court split between three conservative and three liberal justices,” The Associated Press’ one-paragraph primer on the race says. “This winner could become the deciding vote on cases dealing with abortion, unions and voting.”
The high stakes of the contest led megabillionaire Elon Musk, Donald Trump’s main funder and sidekick, to take a personal and financial interest in it. Musk did everything he could to buy the election and flip the court, spending massive sums. Musk poured $19.3 million into the contest and would have been the man responsible for a Schimel victory, according to Wisconsin’s Republican U.S. Senator Ron Johnson.
