Four Republicans Rebuke Trump as House Passes Iran War Powers Resolution

Source: Newsweek

The House on Wednesday passed a war powers resolution aimed at curbing President Donald Trump’s military action in Iran, approving the measure 215-208.

The vote, which saw four Republicans—Warren Davidson of Ohio, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Tom Barrett of Michigan and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania—join Democrats, marks the first time the chamber has moved to force an end to the conflict without congressional authorization.

Massie wrote on X, "The Iran War Powers Resolution that I cosponsored (opposing the war) just passed the House of Representatives. The People’s House is sending a message: end this war."

The vote comes amid growing unease on Capitol Hill over the Iran war, a military campaign launched earlier this year without congressional approval, highlighting a broader constitutional clash over whether the president or Congress should decide when the United States goes to war.

In the house and senate …

He can't veto it but it's just symbolic. The one in the Senate isn't symbolic, but he can just veto that one. We are screwed.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., argued that this vote would "weaken" Trump's hand on negotiating with Iran.

BREAKING: House adopts war powers resolution to rein in Trump on Iran

More than three months after President Donald Trump first launched an attack on Iran — and, more relevantly, more than 90 days since the war began — the House successfully voted to reassert Congress’ authority over the war.

In a 215-208 vote, the House adopted a war powers resolution on Wednesday, with four Republicans joining all Democrats in support of the legislation. (Reps. Tom Barrett, R-Mich., Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., and Thomas Massie, R-Ky., voted for the resolution.)

It’s a symbolic blow to Trump, who has largely maintained an iron grip over the House GOP conference throughout the Iran conflict, even as the war dragged past a significant 90-day deadline intended to limit a president’s ability to wage war without congressional authorization.....

Over in the Senate, lawmakers last month also voted to advance a war powers resolution, 50-47. That procedural vote came amid GOP attendance issues and newfound independence from some Republicans, including Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana who recently lost his primary bid for a third term.

But Senate GOP leaders expect that, with full attendance, the measure would fail on a final vote.

Separately on Wednesday, the House also advanced a bill to both provide additional aid to Ukraine and impose new sanctions on Russia. That vote was 218-205, with six Republicans joining Democrats.

Democrats used a discharge petition to force the Ukraine aid vote, going around House GOP leaders who control floor action.

A vote on final passage could happen as soon as Thursday.

When (not if) Drumpf capitulates he'll have his built-in excuse - "I had a deal but the Dems & RINOs weakened my hand" or some such bullspit.

It sure took them long enough to find a spine on that side of the aisle. The east wing in shambles w/no real plan for a "ballroom" (I think the bunker was the real story w/this project); no more foreign wars - that's bipartisan, cage fights on the white house lawn - really?, no bands for his big birthday bash, and no slush fund for his pardoned goons.

I think the air is finally coming out of the sails.
