STAFFORD, Va. (AP) — A bus struck six vehicles on Interstate 95 in Virginia as traffic slowed for a work zone, killing five people and sending 34 to hospitals, state police said Friday.

The crash happened at about 2:35 a.m. on southbound I-95 in Stafford County. All five of the people who died were in vehicles hit by the bus, and three of the injured are in critical condition, police said.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that traffic was slowing southbound for an upcoming work zone,” state police said in a news release. “A bus failed to slow for traffic and struck six vehicles.”

It was not immediately known what the bus was being used for or how many people were aboard.

The bus driver, Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, and additional charges were likely, Virginia State Police said. It was not immediately known if he was in custody or had a lawyer yet.

Further, and this is the interesting part, according to the article, he is a native of China and does not speak English. If this is true, how in hell did he get a NY state driver's license, let alone the kind that allows you to drive a bus?

The driver didn't even speak English, how could they hire him as a driver without that basic requirement

Authorities said that while the investigation remains ongoing, there is probable cause to show that Dong caused the crash and was driving in a criminally negligent manner at the time.

Dong has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

According to U.S. Secretary Sean Duffy, Dong is a U.S. citizen who was born in China and does not speak English, and reportedly obtained his commercial driver’s license in New York in 2024.

“Our investigators are reviewing New York licensing records, training documentation, and the driver’s history. Any company, trainer, or school that contributed to putting an unqualified driver on the road will face intense scrutiny. We’ll share more updates soon. My prayers are with the loved ones of the innocent lives lost and those who were hurt in this horrific crime,” Duffy said.
