USPS considers allowing people to ship handguns through the mail

LAS VEGAS -- Handguns could be mailed through the United States Postal Service for the first time in nearly 100 years if a proposed rule under the Trump administration takes effect. Democratic attorneys general in two dozen states sent a letter this week in opposition.
In 1927, Congress passed a law barring the USPS from mailing concealable firearms unless they were from licensed dealers in an effort to curb crime. In January, the Department of Justice revisited the 1927 law, calling it unconstitutional and arguing that it violated the Second Amendment, and urged the postal service to change its regulations.
The Department of Justice said that as long as Congress chooses to run a parcel service, the Second Amendment precludes it from refusing to ship constitutionally protected firearms to and from law-abiding citizens, even if they are not licensed manufacturers or dealers.
Last month USPS proposed a new rule that would allow anyone to mail concealable firearms like pistols and revolvers. USPS currently allows some firearms like long-barreled rifles and shotguns to be mailed, however they must be unloaded and securely packaged. Similar protections would be in place for handguns, which have evolved since 1927. The USPS said in a statement that it is reviewing public comments which were due Monday before making final changes.

(17,901 posts)chance of them being stolen from mail carriers, from their trucks. Sounds like a horrible idea unless they have a secure way of handling them.

Tell me again how to know they are law-abiding. Most gun owners are law-abiding until they use their dick extenders to shoot up their sassy wife, a guy they don't like, or something else that irritates them?

(2,535 posts)by the time they get this passed, the Republicans will have already destroyed the USPS at the rate they are going......
Just wait until a private company takes over.........a first class letter, delivered, will cost 15.00, and packages will go sky high.
Rural America will get screwed the worse, because FedEx and UPS won't be able to dump them on the USPS for Last Mile Delivery like they have been doing for quite some time.....
Of course, the Trumphumping Voters in Rural America will pretend that that is just fine......
The only consolation that WE can have, is knowing that all the MAGA Trumphumping Voters will get creamed at least as bad as WE all do......ESPECIALLY the Rural masses.......

Sheesh!

(42,198 posts)My only guess is that they think they can track the names and addresses of who sent and who received the firearms. That way they can pin something on the recipient, who they assume ordered a gun by mail because he/she intended to commit a crime.
Great detective work there, Sherlock!

(750 posts)Who ever said such a thing? we're talking about shipping something through the mail (something that's already been happening for decades), not canonizing it.

I got lucky in that there is a gun broker that is headquartered near me. The owner came by and personally picked up most of them, otherwise I would have been shipping all them guns via FedEx or UPS. I had to ship one last one via UPS. I boxed it securely, and the language on the shipping label was vague.
That whole chapter was such a learning experience.

(10,329 posts)those are special delivery, not just tossed on some mail truck doing hours of residential to be dropped off at a gun store later. If this becomes law and is spewed all over Trumps kiss ass MSM there will be trucks hijacked and carriers killed probably on a daily basis.
This is a bad, really bad idea.

(750 posts)A lot of shipping is for repair, or customization. Custom stock work or trigger work, possibly something cosmetic, maybe engraving or anodizing. If something needs repair it may get shipped to a gunsmith or back to the manufacturer. I've done this myself. some items need to be worked on by a specialist in an another state. This happens all the time. Like right now there are already tons of guns and gun pieces in shipping transit all over the place. I'm sorry this really is a big nothing to panic about. The only real change with this is people are no longer limited to FEDEX/UPS for their shipping options.
