Johnson told White House that GOP isn't interested in extending ACA subsidies
Source: CBS News
Speaker Mike Johnson has told the White House that most House Republicans have little interest in extending the Affordable Care Act's enhanced subsidies, sources familiar with the conversation told CBS News.
Johnson delivered the message in a phone call with senior administration officials as President Trump's advisers were drafting a plan to continue the subsidies for an additional two years. That plan that was initially expected to emerge this week.
The Wall Street Journal first reported Johnson's warning to the White House regarding the lack of GOP House support for the plan. Any White House health care plan would require overwhelming Republican support in the House to be enacted.
The enhanced subsidies expire at the end of this year, affecting tens of millions who benefit from them. The subsidies were at the heart of the government shutdown funding fight.

(8,375 posts)major poison pills were added, there is no reason Democrats wouldn't support that. In that case, only a handful of Republican votes would be needed to pass. But Johnson has made clear he won't bring it to the floor.

(60,710 posts)always thought of themselves as basically ok economically. Having to suddenly come up with as much as $1000 a month or more for insurance suddenly upsets whatever economic security they thought they had.
Some are people who retired before 65 without a healthcare benefit from their former employer, some are self employed.
I would bet, especially in a red state, these are not just their constituents, but their trusted supporters. I would hope they are calling them, especially if they are among the people who actually know the representative.

"Republicans say they have been inundated with calls and emails from constituents sharing their stories of how annual premiums could jump by tens of thousands of dollars in the new year. Mr. Van Drew recounted talking with a small-business owner whose yearly premium would rise to $34,000 from $16,000."

"The potential sticker shock is particularly acute in swing districts where marketplace enrollment is high and household budgets are already strained. Several of the Republicans pushing for a deal represent such areas and face difficult re-election races.
During the recent shutdown fight, the group wrote to Mr. Johnson urging him to pivot immediately to the expiring A.C.A. subsidies once the government reopened. In the letter last month, the group warned that letting the tax credits lapse would risk real harm to families in their districts, and said Republicans must chart a conservative path to prevent steep premium spikes."

I told everyone that this was going to happen and they said I "worry too much". They can afford to say that since they have health care not involved with the ACA. Instead of making me feel better they make me feel like shit!!!!! How dare anyone tell me not to worry when I have been on top of this shit since 2012. This is MY LIFE we're talking about....of course I should fucking worry!!!!!

Citizens United was one of the most grotesquely corrupt pieces of legislation in American history, and politicians especially those of the Republican persuasion loves dem summa dat billionaire pocket change they euphemistically refer to as "Campaign Donations". The welfare of their constituents in just an occasional annoyance they avoid whenever possible.

ACA Subsidies mean that the people who are ON the AFFORDABLE CARE ACT right NOW were able to AFFORD healthcare.
REPUBLICANS have FOUGHT renewing the subsidies.
REPUBLICANS do not WANT to RENEW them for ANY length of time.
IF you are on the ACA and your premiums double or triple, it will be BECAUSE OF REPUBLICANS. The good news, though, is that it made tax cuts for Musk, Bezos, Thiel and Zuckerberg possible.
