Ecuador releases survivor of US strike on 'drug sub' in Caribbean

Source: BBC

Ecuador has released the survivor of a US strike on a submarine alleged to have been smuggling drugs in the Caribbean.

AP also reported that it had seen a document from the Ecuadorean government which outlined that "there is no evidence or indication that could lead prosecutors or judicial authorities to be certain" that Tufiño had violated any current laws in Ecuadorean territory.

The Colombian survivor arrived in his homeland "with a traumatic brain injury, sedated, medicated, and breathing with the help of a ventilator", according to Colombia's interior minister.
...
The minister, Armando Benedetti, said that the man had been on "a vessel full of cocaine, and that in our country is a crime".

I can see that, since the semi-submersible must have started on the Caribbean side of South America, that it can't have left from Ecuador, and with it at the bottom of sea, the evidence wouldn't stand up beyond all reasonable doubt. It sounds like the Colombian minister intends to prosecute (although Trump is currently doing everything he can to piss off Colombia) - maybe there's reason to believe it left from Colombia.

President Trump on Monday said the U.S. should no longer serve as the “policemen of the world.”

“We more and more are not wanting to be the policemen of the world,” Trump said during a joint press conference with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We’re spending tremendous amounts of money for decades policing the world, and that shouldn’t be the priority,” he said. “We want to police ourselves and we want to rebuild our country. And the president understands that.”{mosads}

Trump ran on the promise that he would extricate the U.S. from foreign wars.
