Top White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett on Monday predicted that the government shutdown is likely to end sometime this week. But if that does not happen, the Trump administration may impose stronger measures to force Democrats to cooperate, Hassett said on CNBCs Squawk Box.
The comments came deep into the third week of the shutdown, which is dragging on with no clear end in sight amid a partisan fight in the Senate over federal funding priorities.
Republicans want to pass a short-term resolution to resume funding at current levels. Democrats demand that any stopgap bill include additional spending on health care protections, including an extension of enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits that are due to expire at years end.
Hassett said on CNBC that he has heard from the Senate that Democrats thought it would be bad optics to vote to reopen the government before this weekends massive nationwide No Kings protests against President Donald Trump. Now theres a shot that this week, things will come together, and very quickly, Hassett said. The moderate Democrats will move forward and get us an open government, at which point we could negotiate whatever policies they want to negotiate with regular order.

Um no.
The only 2 scenarios where I see that happening is -
1.) Thune puts up a vote to kill the filibuster (cloture) which only needs a simple majority (basically 51 votes)
2.) They completely and openly ignore the Constitution and artificially "reopen" the government, running to their Master John Roberts for the go-ahead.

It's not in the Constitution, but implied powers vs. enumerated powers, English common law maybe?

The fact that the GOP is doing all kinds of equivocations and alternative scenarios that still ignore the law, is showing that THEY are "cracking".

(5,210 posts)We are pushing for a permanent extension of ACA and other health coverage expansion. The GOP are trying to keep their deficit numbers down enough to get reelected. I really doubt our team was holding out past the protest.

(162,062 posts)I.e., the tax cuts for the billionaires can be repealed too if we ever got control of Congress and the WH. As it is, parts of the original 2017 tax cuts were modified after passage.
But with all the "negotiation" courses I have taken, you usually ask for the moon and go from there. There are alot of things in that Brutal Barbaric Bill plus the tariffs nonsense, that are killing the GOP voters and many of them are "starting to crack". That is why they are suddenly talking about "piecemeal" funding stuff.
They SHOULD HAVE been passing "piecemeal" bills through this year anyway before we got to this point and there is nothing stopping them from continuing to pass separate appropriations bills versus the "all or nothing" that is being propagandized.
I worked and got paid during the Gingrich shutdown in the '90s being in an agency that got funding (I think only 3 or 4 appropriations bills had been passed at the time and everyone covered under the ones that were not, were furloughed).

(2,732 posts)Because even if the president signs it, precedent shows he can decide to reverse course and decline to appropriate the funds, or issue an executive order to reverse the policy. And this Congress will do nothing to counter his action, nor will SCOTUS oppose it.
Negotiations with these Republicans is a fools errand.
What can we do to counter them? If republican congress will do nothing to oppose his actions, we cant do much beyond trying to win the next elections and then reverse their destructive actions.

(162,062 posts)with the now-hundreds of lawsuits that have been filed, the vast majority of the adverse actions have been thwarted by the lower courts and in the scheme of things, just a handful of "high profile" ones have made it to Roberts to overrule (purportedly "for now" ).
So for some things, they ARE "following the law" and in many cases, haven't pursued appeals or if they did, those haven't moved anywhere quickly. But in this "flood the zone" era, it's hard to keep track of what is where.
The GOP has the megaphone media to make it seem that "the majority" approve of what they are doing and you are really starting to see the squirming and pretzel-twisting going on in their ranks having realized they had no "exit strategy".
In the meantime, clawing back power in many of our states in elections that happen THIS YEAR is what needs to be the focus.
