'Department of War' Bluesky Account Immediately Trolled After Launch

Source: Newsweek

Published Oct 17, 2025 at 11:24 PM EDT updated Oct 18, 2025 at 12:20 PM EDT

The Department of Defense (DOD) faced a tough welcome on Bluesky when it launched a "Department of War" account on the social media platform.

The account, which made its first post at 6:16 p.m. ET, announced its arrival on the app and tagged Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, saying he should "thank PRESIDENT TRUMP and SECRETARY OF WAR PETE HEGSETH for making sure EVERY military kid still has health care during your Democrat Shutdown."

But users immediately responded with mockery: The first comment on the post responded several times asking about the Jeffrey Epstein files and when they would be released—and it didn't stop there.

Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson told Newsweek in an emailed statement: “The Department, along with the White House and other government agencies, recently joined Bluesky to reach even more Americans.”

That is the first thing I did. Block them all. Bluesky is the only remaining social media (besides DU) where you can have civilized conversations without right-wing trolls spewing nonsense. I hope it stays that way.

is the reason I stay off all of it. I was over on Mastadon for a while, but it was far from anything political. And even then, I didn't post much... just learned what I wanted from the messages I was reading. I figured BlueSky would be "White-Housed" at some point. I want nothing to do with any of them or their surveillance software. I'll set up a forum on a subdomain of my website, should I get too lonesome for people!

… there are third party tools that can turn you into an eleventybillioth black belt Ninja Bluesky Blocking Master. My favorite two:

• clearsky.app is enormously useful for putting users under the microscope.
• Blockenheimer https://block.alxtratrstrl.xyz/index.html allows you to make lists (for example, a list of everyone who reposts or likes specific memes from the Orange House or Kegsbreath's War Department) - and block them ALL with one click!
